Summer Time in Disney

Seeking the shade in the Disney Parks

It’s no secret that summer time in Disney World can be brutally hot. We live in Massachusetts and we are not used to the heat and humidity that the southern part of the country experiences in the summer. However, my wife is a school teacher, which means we can only go on vacations during school vacation weeks and summer break. We always lean towards going during the summer, mostly due to cost of flights and crowd levels.

We have traveled during each of the summer months, and notice differences in the heat levels during the summer season in Central Florida. In our experience, June and early July are much less oppressive than anytime in August. Don’t get me wrong, all of the summer is super hot and sweaty but……when we went last year in August it was THE HOTTEST and most HUMID of them all. The second we walked out of the hotel room, sunglasses were fogged and the sweat was rolling down our faces.

Cooling off at the Swan and Dolphin

Not all parks are equal on the heat index!

I always feel that Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studies are the hottest parks! I have no way to back up this claim, but every time we go, those two seem to be the hottest. Epcot can be very hot as well but for the most part its easy to pop in and out of stores, exhibits and rides to get some AC. Plus there is plenty of beverage options in World Showcase =).

Here are our tried and true tips and tricks to stay cool during our trips to Disney in the summer months:

  • Start early, rope drop of possible before the afternoon heat kicks in

  • Hydrate often, we use Liquid IV

  • Body Glide, avoid chaffing

  • Plan for midday breaks, either lunch time in a cool restaurant or go back to the resort to cool off and get out of the sun.

  • Wear light, comfortable clothing - Athleisure (we will save this for another blog)

  • Sunscreen, make sure to reapply throughout the day

  • Find the shady spots if you are stopping to watch a parade

  • Air Conditioning is your best friend - Most times we will choose to walk through stores instead of the main paths just to get a cool blast of AC.

  • Avoid eating hot meals during the day - Except for the spring roll cart in adventure land, always stop for the cheeseburger spring rolls!
